Five Simple Shed Storage Ideas

Five Simple Shed Storage Ideas

Storage sheds are fantastic for keeping clutter out of the house, but what happens when the shed itself becomes cluttered? With gardening gear, bikes, and handy tools all making a home in your shed, it can quickly go from neat and tidy to a total mess if you're not careful. We've put together some of the top ideas for maximising your shed storage space so you can create an organisation haven.

1. Plan beforehand

When you're excited to declutter, it can be tempting to buy a bunch of new organisation equipment as soon as possible. However, this could lead to more mess in the long run as you add more shelving and storage without proper planning.

Take it slowly. Start by organising your belongings into different categories, so you have a good idea of your storage needs– how much space you require for sports equipment, tools, and so on. From there, you can plan your shed layout so that each object type gets a dedicated space for easy access.

Building or buying a new shed? Consider the shed size, layout, and material first:

  • Layout: To store large items, such as old furniture or workbenches, consider the position of the shed's door to maximise storage space.

  • Size: Of course, you want a shed with enough floor space to fit all your stuff. However, think hard about how much storage space you really need. If you build or buy a bigger shed than required, you could easily find yourself buying more objects to fill the space!

  • Material: Your shed should be made of durable materials that protect your belongings against harsh weather conditions like rain and wind. Read our blog post on the best outdoor shed material for more information.

Whatever size shed you need, Keter offers a wide range of durable resin storage sheds that protect your objects regardless of climate.

2. Stack things up

Instead of leaving small items loose on workbenches or stuffed in bags, store them in stackable containers! These can go a long way in saving shed space and keeping your items free of dust. Some creative stackable storage ideas include:

  • Kitchen containers: Storage containers come in all sizes, so they're ideal for easily organising everything from nuts and bolts to toys and tools.

  • Splitting up your stackables: Is your stackable box too big for your screws or nails? Cut up some cardboard to section off the interior of the box. This way, you can use the storage box for different items without jamming everything up.

  • Clear storage boxes: Organise your items in clear boxes so you know what's stored inside without the hassle of opening and closing them each time.

  • Labels: If you prefer solid colour storage boxes, use a pen, paper, and some sticky tape to create labels for quickly identifying items.

  • Food packaging: Most food packaging is designed to be stackable to maximise shelf space. Once you're done with that ice cream container, clean and repurpose it as a cheap way to store seasonal items like small Christmas decorations.

3. Maximise vertical space

Make the most of your shed by maximising wall space. Install garden shed shelving units to store small items at eye level. Or, mount wall hooks to hang rakes, shovels, and saws. It's a safer way to store long tools than leaning them against the wall (a potential hazard if knocked over).

Remember, if you want to mount hooks or shelves directly onto your shed, consider whether your shed's walls can handle the weight. If you don't know how much weight each wall can hold, you could use cabinets or rack shelving to make more room for tools and other belongings instead.

Keter's height-adjustable shelves and hooks are specifically designed to be mounted on our plastic resin sheds. Our shed organiser accessories work with all models except our Factor line.

4. Display your storage

Storage doesn't just have to save space – it can also let you present your belongings nicely and get more use out of them. A neat display will motivate you to keep your shed and items tidy, preventing further clutter.

For example, you could organise your shed by using a tool pegboard to hang tools on the wall. It's a simple, cheap way to keep your equipment within easy reach of the workbench. And unlike using drawers, you won't need to go scouring for the right tools every time.

You can also create more free storage space by having baskets, hooks, and small shelves attached to your wall pegboard. Hanging cords and cables on hooks prevents them from getting tangled, looks neater, and will make things go smoother the next time you need to get the garden hose out.

5. Make things mobile

Choose storage items or furniture that are easy to move around. For instance, mobile tool storage systems are perfect for storing metal tools like screwdrivers and pliers. These systems let you bring your workspace directly to your project, saving you time and effort by reducing trips back and forth to the shed.

Keter's mobile tool storage systems are ideal for storing tools in sheds and garages.

Stackable and foldable furniture is another great storage solution for maximising your shed space. If you work outside often, you could consider buying a folding workbench – ideal for moving about and quickly collapsing to make more space in your shed.
